After seven months of racing on the streets of nine of the most iconic cities in the world, Formula E heads to Zurich this weekend for the final round of the European leg of Season Four where a champion could be crowned.
After taking three victories at Santiago, Punta del Este and Paris, Jean-Eric Vergne could wrap up the title this weekend before Formula E flies to New York next month for the season finale, with the Frenchman currently leading the championship on a tally of 162 points.
While DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird is Vergne's nearest challenger, 40 points adrift in second place in the championship, Felix Rosenqvist, Daniel Abt, Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi still all stand a mathematical chance of securing this season's title.
With 87 points remaining, it is a nigh impossible task for di Grassi to take a second title this season, 86 points behind Vergne in the standings in sixth.
If di Grassi is to stay in contention, the Brazilian driver will have to pray for a miracle to happen and would need to take three grand slams (pole position, fastest lap and victory) in the final three races of this season while the top five in the championship would not be able to score a single point.
For Buemi, the story is similar, and the Season Two champion would have to outscore Vergne by 22 points on home turf this weekend, essentially meaning that nothing but a win will do in a season which has seen Renault e.dams fail to convincingly challenge for victory.
Buemi could afford to finish in second place, although he would still need pole position and fastest lap while Vergne would have to finish outside of the top 10.
After a dominating performance at last month's Berlin E-Prix, Audi Sport's Daniel Abt was able to bolster his position in the championship and the German now lies in fourth in the standings, 77 points adrift from the top of the table.
For a chance to stay in contention, Abt will have to take victory while Vergne will have to finish in seventh or second place with pole position and fastest lap would do for Abt, if Vergne finishes in ninth or lower.
In the opening stages of Season Four, Felix Rosenqvist looked set to be a championship challenger, however, after a fade in form from Mahindra Racing, the Swede and former European Formula 3 champion is now an outsider in the 2017/18 title fight, 76 points adrift of Vergne.
To carry his championship aspirations over to New York, Rosenqvist must outscore Vergne by 18 points which could be secured through victory and a seventh for Vergne or through second place and a pointless weekend for his French rival.
40 points behind Vergne, Bird is realistically, the only other contender for this season's championship but could also, like the four drivers behind him in the standings, get knocked out of contention if Vergne wins and he finishes seventh or below.
In the event of Vergne finishing in second place, Bird will have to finish outside of the top 10 for Formula E's next champion to be decided and for Vergne to win his first title since 2010 when the Frenchman raced in British Formula 3.
"I’m not here to do maths," Vergne told Motorsport Week.
"I’m here to race and I’m here to do the best job I can and we’ll see what happens at the end of the race because it means that I will need to know what Sam Bird is doing and that’s not my concern.”
