Max Verstappen on top again in Canadian GP FP2

Max Verstappen was on form once again in Montreal as he topped second practice for the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday.

The Red Bull driver has topped both practice sessions as he looks to answer his critics following a string of crashes in recent races. The Dutchman's 1:12.198 was more than a second quicker than he managed earlier in the day during FP1.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was second quickest, a tenth down on Verstappen's pace, whilst the second Red Bull car of Daniel Ricciardo was third despite missing much of the session due to an issue with his power unit – although it didn't require a change. Ricciardo managed just 17 laps, less than half Verstappen's tally of 39.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton came in fourth ahead of Sebastian Vettel with the pair 0.579s and 0.787s down respectively.

Valtteri Bottas was sixth with neither Mercedes cars using the Hypersoft tyre on Friday due to having only five sets. The team confirmed plans to run it during FP3.

The session was briefly interrupted by a red flag when Carlos Sainz span and swiped the wall with the rear of his Renault. Although Sainz was able to return to his garage, race control felt the resultant debris required clearing up. That ended the Spaniard's session and he finished 17th quickest.

A Virtual Safety Car was also issued later in the session when McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne brushed the wall and punctured his right-rear as well as causing some suspension damage.

Romain Grosjean, Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso completed the top 10, whilst the Williams cars were 19th and 20th.
