Daniel Ricciardo blames practice crash on ‘big’ Turn 4 tailwind

Daniel Ricciardo says a "big" tailwind in Turn 4 during first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix was to blame for his early session crash on Friday.

The Red Bull driver skipped through the gravel before finding the tyre wall, causing damage to his front wing and suspension, curtailing his running.

"There were a few of us making errors for sure," said Ricciardo, who was running Red Bull's old-spec wing in the session. "Unfortunately mine was costly enough to miss the last hour of that session.

"Tailwind is a big one in F1. Any corners with a tailwind you lose a lot of rear grip. Into Turn 4 that was a tough one because there was a tailwind and it is a corner where you have to drive into it with the brake, so you load up the front and unload the rear.

"It is a bad corner to have a tailwind. So it makes it tricky. It caught me out this morning."

Ricciardo also questioned the effectiveness of the Supersoft tyres this weekend, but was happier with the RB14 during second practice. when he bolted on the Soft tyre and finished second fastest, just 0.133s adrift of leader Lewis Hamilton.

"We didn’t really get it [the Supersoft] working. The front tyres don’t really seem like they are working well with these conditions. On the high fuel it was a bit better. Then we put the Softs on and it was a lot quicker. So the Supersoft, unless something changes, it doesn’t look like a nice tyre this weekend.

"[But] today was okay. This morning I had a mistake, but we cleaned it up and this afternoon was a pretty good session.

"We got our heads down and did some laps. It was important for this new car now – there are a lot of aerodynamicists upstairs – so we needed the laps to give them as much feedback as possible."

Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen was third fastest in the second session.
