Williams confirms departure of chief designer Ed Wood

Williams has confirmed the departure of its Chief Designer Ed Wood after 12 years with the team.

Williams cited "personal reasons" for Wood's departure, which comes as the British team occupies the bottom of the Constructors' table, having only scored its first points of the season last time out in Azerbaijan, courtesy of Lance Stroll's eighth-placed finish.

"We can confirm that Ed Wood has decided to leave Williams for personal reasons," a team spokesperson told Motorsport Week.

"As Chief Designer, Ed has been instrumental in many successes during his time with the team, including the FW36 and FW37 cars which secured third place in the Constructors’ Championship in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

"The team would like to express its gratitude to Ed for his hard work over the past twelve years; his experience, skill and passion for engineering has been a huge asset to Williams."

The team has struggled this season having switched its design concept following the return of Paddy Lowe as technical officer and this management change is the first under Lowe's leadership. 

It also backs up speculation that former McLaren designer Tim Goss, who has worked closely with Lowe in the past, could be set to replace Wood.
