Timo Glock takes Sunday victory after epic duel with Gary Paffett

BMW's Timo Glock rounded off an exciting weekend of racing at Hockenheim with victory during race two on Sunday following an epic duel with Mercedes' Gary Paffett.

The action kicked off after the mandatory pitstop window with pole-sitter Glock stopping a lap before Paffett, who put in a stellar in-lap to emerge right on the tail of the German's BMW. Paffett aided by second-placed Lucas Auer being hit with a jump-start penalty.

The duo traded the lead of the race on numerous occasions. It all came to the boil as those behind began to catch the battle and Paffett finally fell into the clutches of Joel Eriksson. However Eriksson failed to grab second as he and Paffett touched wheels, allowing Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller through for third.

That gave Glock the space he needed to take the victory in what he called "the best race ever".

"That was the hottest race in my life," he said on team radio after the race. "That was pure racing, I really had to squeeze everything out of the car and had no time to recover. That's what makes the DTM. That was the best race ever – and I've done a lot in my career."

Rockenfeller then made a move for second on the final lap of the race, which Paffett was unable to defend against, dropping to third where he would finish, ahead of Eriksson by just three-tenths.

"This was an insane race and an absolute fight on the limit. I fought until the last round and everything was super fair. It was so much fun," said Rockenfeller.

Paffett added: "That was a really incredible race. I never gave up and even if it was only third place, it was still worth it."

Loic Duval was fifth in his Audi RS5, an impressive feat given he was competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship's 6 Hours of Spa just yesterday.

Mercedes junior Pascal Wehrlein was sixth with reigning champion Rene Rast seventh after he lost several spots after running slightly wide.

Completing the top 10 was Bruno Spengler – a job well done given he started at the back – Paul di Resta and Augusto Farfus.
