After setting the pace in final practice, Felix Rosenqvist claimed a sixth career pole position in a scrappy qualifying session for the inaugural Rome ePrix.

Rosenqvist completed his initial qualifying run in the second group of qualifiers to set a best time of a 1:36.683.

While no one was able to match the Swedish racer in the third group, Andre Lotterer took the fight to Mahindra for Techeetah, setting the pace to beat Rosenqvist by 0.090 seconds, bagging himself a spot in Super Pole.

Alongside Lotterer and Rosenqvist in Super Pole would be Mitch Evans for Jaguar Racing, DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird and Season Two champion Sebastien Buemi for Renault e.dams, with current championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne missing out on a place in the final qualifying shootout.

Evans opened up proceedings but failed to set a convincing lap and his best efforts were quickly spoiled by Bird who claimed provisional pole position with a 1:36.987.

Buemi was the third man to run in the session but when the Swiss racer missed the apex of the hairpin on the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR track, he too was out of contention for what could have been a second pole position this season.

With only Rosenqvist and Lotterer remaining, the Swede was next up, smashing Bird's time by 0.667 seconds to claim the top spot. Despite setting the pace in the group qualifying stages, Lotterer was unable to match Rosenqvist.

With Rosenqvist unbeaten, the Swedish racer claimed the top spot in qualifying followed by Bird, Evans, Lotterer and Buemi who completed the top five for Renault e.dams.

Reigning Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi qualified in sixth place, being pushed out of Super Pole through Lotterer's late session efforts in the fourth group of qualifiers. Di Grassi lines up alongside current championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne who only managed eighth in qualifying for Techeetah.

Daniel Abt qualified in ninth place in the second Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler machine while Nick Heidfeld completed the top ten in the second Mahindra.

Alex Lynn lines up in 11th after taking a cautious approach in qualifying following two crashes in first and second practice while Tom Blomqvist qualified in 12th for Andretti Formula E, with qualifying in Rome marking the first time that the British driver hasn't made contact with the wall in a qualifying session this season.

Nelson Piquet Jr ended the session in a disappointing 13th while Maro Engel was 14th fastest for Venturi.

Jerome d'Ambrosio ended qualifying in 16th after running out of time in the first group of runners to set a 200kW lap, instead completing his lap with 170kW of power.

Edoardo Mortara was 17th in the second Venturi after the Swiss driver hit the wall while home favourite Luca Filippi, like d'Ambrosio, failed to set a flying lap, meaning that the Italian racer lines up in 18th on the grid.

Jose Maria Lopez and Antonio Felix da Costa completed the field in qualifying after the pair crashed into one another in the pit lane, meaning that they were unable to complete a flying lap, lining up in 19th and 20th.
