Jay Howard will return to the Indianapolis 500 this year with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, the team confirmed on Friday.
Howard ended a six-year absence from the series when he linked up with SPM at last season’s running of the event, but crashed out, with his errant car providing the launch pad for Scott Dixon’s violent accident.
Howard will be the fourth SPM entry for the event, joining regulars James Hinchcliffe and Robert Wickens, and Michael Shank-backed co-entry Jack Harvey.
Howard will drive the No 7 car, which will be sponsored by One Cure, an organisation specialising in the research and studying of cancer and treatments across different species.
“To say I am excited is an understatement,” said Howard.
“I also want to thank everyone at SPM and Honda for this opportunity. It will be great to be back with the team.”
Howard will commence his Indianapolis programme with the rookie and refresher orientated test session next Wednesday.
