Marc VDS' Alex Marquez dominated qualifying in Qatar to claim the first pole of the 2018 Moto2 season ahead of Pons rider Lorenzo Baldassarri.
Miguel Oliveira shot to the top of the timesheets in the opening minutes of qualifying on his Red Bull Ajo KTM, the Portuguese rider firing in a 2:01.693s, which he bettered on his next lap to a 2:01.200s.
FP3 pacesetter Marquez deposed the KTM rider with 2:00.651s, the best lap of the weekend at that point, while Sam Lowes leaped up to third at the start of his first Moto2 qualifying session since 2016.
The Briton's session came unstuck just moments later, however, as he crashed at Turn 7. He was unscathed in the tumble, but lost almost 15 minutes while his bike was repaired.
While Lowes was out of action, Jorge Navarro and Francesco Bagnaia bumped him back to fifth, while Oliveira closed to within two-tenths of Marquez's provisional pole lap.
With five minutes left on the clock, Marquez twisted the knife and produced a 2:00.299s to cement his fourth intermediate class pole, while Baldassarri snatched his first front row since Catalunya last year with a late charge to second.
Bagnaia found himself shuffled off the front row in the closing stages, but dug deep and fired in a 2:00.843s to go third, denying Oliveira by just 0.003 seconds.
Moto2 rookie Romano Fenati has been quick all weekend, ending all three practice sessions inside the top 10, and continued his strong form to qualify for his class debut fifth, while fellow Moto3 graduates Bo Bendsneyder and Joan Mir were 20th and 24th respectively.
Danny Kent guided his Speed Up to a 2:00.965s to complete the second row, while Navarro found himself knocked back to the head of row three at the chequered flag ahead of Mattia Pasini and Marcel Schrotter.
Lowes was unable to improve on 10th following his earlier crash, with Xavi Vierge, Remy Gardner, Brad Binder, Simone Corsi and Iker Lecuona rounding out the top 15.
