Mercedes' Toto Wolff has praised the Formula E championship for its growth "against all odds" as fans and manufacturers flock to the all-electric single seater series.

Now in its fourth season, Formula E has grown considerably since its inaugural race in 2014, attracting automotive giants such as Renault, Citroen, Audi, BMW and Nissan to the series.

While the field currently operates at 10 teams and 20 drivers, the championship is set to expand further in 2019 as both Mercedes and Porsche join the electric revolution.

Mercedes is a manufacturer that is keen to see Formula E develop and grow having strengthened its ties to Venturi through factory drivers Maro Engel and Edoardo Mortara, and its affiliated HWA branch.

"Formula E is an exciting platform and against all odds Alejandro [Agag] and his team have managed to build a series which is interesting for many people,” said Wolff.

“It clearly hits the Zeitgeist as corporate boardrooms are talking about it and what he and his team are doing is truly amazing.

“We saw the drawings of the new car which is coming in one year which looks amazing and it is a completely new concept.

"I enjoy opening up my horizon to the new series. We are excited to join Formula E,” he added.
