The all-new Electric GT Championship has been sanctioned by the governing body of world motorsport, the FIA, ahead of the start of its inaugural season this year.
The series, in which a field of 20 drivers will battle it out driving a race-prepared Tesla Model S P100D, currently has eight races scheduled for the 2018 season in France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK and Spain, with the ninth race yet to be announced.
Race weekends will consist of a three-heat qualifying session followed by two 60km races, one of which will be held during the day and the other at dusk, with power being set to a maximum of 585 kW (778 hp).
Following the race, a "Drift Off" style event will be held on suitable circuits where the top two finishing drivers and another two fan-voted drivers will compete head-to-head in an attempt to secure additional championship points.
The Electric GT Championship will be supported each race weekend by eKarting – an international karting series designed to find electric acing's next star – and an eSports Series.
“This is such an exciting day for us as we confirm that the Electric Production Car Series has been officially sanctioned by the FIA. We respect the FIA and we are honoured to have their support ahead of our inaugural season," said Mark Gemmell, CEO of Electric GT Holdings Inc.
“We are also pleased to officially publish the sporting regulations for the Electric Production Car Series. We have put a lot of time into refining the regulations to allow for competitive and thrilling racing.
“With a three-heat qualifying system and two EPCS races, plus our eKarting and eSports rounds, fans will have a lot of racing action to get excited about," he added.
