Alex Palou will compete in his first season of European Formula 3 in 2018 after signing with Hitech GP.
The 20-year-old Catalan racer made his open-wheel debut in 2014 by joining Campos Racing to compete in the Euroformula Open Championship and Spanish Formula 3 Championship before graduating to the GP3 series in 2015, sealing a season-closing victory at Yas Marina.
In 2017, Palou raced in the All-Japan Formula 3 Championship in which he finished third as well as appearing in the World Series Formula V8 3.5 series and Formula 2 championship where he scored a double points finish on debut.
"I'm super excited to compete in the FIA Formula 3 and even more excited to be joining Hitech GP," said Palou. "The winter tests went really well and I am looking forward to racing back in Europe this year. I’d really like to thank my backers for this opportunity!"
Hitech's team principal, Oliver Oakes, said that he was looking forward to working with Palou over the course of 2018 and highlighted his Formula 2 debut in Jerez as influential in his decision to sign the driver.
“It’s great to have Alex joining the team. I have followed him over the years and he has consistently showed that he is an extremely young, quick and competent driver," he said.
"His one off appearances in Formula 2 in Abu Dhabi and the recent Rookie Test in Super Formula showed he has something special.
"We are looking forward to giving him the chance of a complete programme to mount a challenge for the FIA F3 Championship," Oakes added.
Partnering Palou at Hitech GP will be reigning British Formula 3 champion Enaam Ahmed who signed with the Silverstone-based team at the end of last year.
