Dragon Racing has confirmed that Jose Maria Lopez will replace Neel Jani for the remainder of the 2017-2018 season.
Lopez raced in Formula E last season for DS Virgin Racing alongside Sam Bird, however, missed out on a seat with the team for season four, being replaced at the outfit by Alex Lynn despite securing two podium finishes in Paris and Montreal.
The Argentinian driver will make his debut for the American outfit next weekend at the Marrakesh ePrix on the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan – a circuit that Lopez is familiar with, having secured six podium finishes on six occasions in the WTCC.
After a disappointing opening weekend of the season which saw Dragon fail to secure a single point, Lopez will be keen to start the season off strong, aiming to propel the outfit higher in the Team Standings.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to the challenge of Formula E in season four with Dragon," said Lopez.
"I have good experience from season three, and I’m confident that we can achieve strong results as the season progresses.”
Team owner and principal, Jay Penske, was excited about Dragon's new driver lineup and highlighted it as potentially "winning formula" despite the team struggling having lost backing from Faraday Future and a planned technical partnership with Porsche falling through.
“Jose is a world champion racer who has consistently performed at the highest level in each formula in which he has competed. I’m confident that his season three experience and collaboration with Jerome will be a winning formula for the DRAGON organisation,” he said.
