The Williams F1 Team has rubbished claims made by Oliver Rowland and his team that he is being considered for their second seat alongside Lance Stroll.

A statement issued by Rowland's public relations team stated that the Formula 2 driver had held discussions with the British team about joining their 2018 line-up.

"F1 Renault development driver Oliver Rowland is in talks with Williams about securing a seat for Formula 1 in 2018," read the statement.

"The 25-year-old hasn't been considered an option until now, with Williams still undecided of who to put in the car next year."

Rowland himself added: "My team is in talks with Williams, as they are with other teams. British car, British driver it fits well.

"Lots of drivers seem to be in the frame for 2018, so we will just have to see what happens."

The second seat is up for grabs following Felipe Massa's retirement and a number of drivers, including Robert Kubica and Sergey Sirotkin, are being considered, but according to Williams, that does not include Rowland.

"He is not in contention for the race seat and has not had discussions regarding this role," a team spokesperson said on Friday afternoon.

"We have not got any plans for roles beyond our race drivers at present."
