Prema Racing has announced that Nyck de Vries will be joining the team's driver lineup for 2018 where he will partner Sean Gelael.

De Vries, who is part of the McLaren Young Driver Program, stepped up to race in Formula 2 for 2017 where he enoyed an impressive rookie campaign driving for Rapax and Racing Engineering to finish seventh in the Drivers' Championship.

"First of all, I want to thank everyone involved for this opportunity. I am delighted to join such a successful team as Prema and I thank them for putting their faith in me," said de Vries.

"We have known each other for a while, so to finally be racing together is very exciting and I can’t wait to go back to Italy.

"We’re very much looking forward to the new challenges that the FIA Formula 2 has introduced with the new car for 2018. It will be a very competitive championship, may the best win!”

René Rosin, the team principal of Prema, also commented: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Nyck for the 2018 Formula 2 season.

"His skills are outstanding and we hope that, together with Prema, he will be able to make the most out of his talent and fight for the title, while helping us to get a head start for the new season.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing our great and well-sorted pairing on-track.”

After a 2017 season which saw de Vries secure a win in the Monaco Sprint Race and further podiums at Baku, the Hungaroring and Spa, many will be watching the Dutchamn for 2018 as he joins a team that has impressed since it joined the series in 2016 as attempts to chase a path to Formula 1.

With McLaren's Lando Norris also competing in the series next season for Carlin, the Woking-based will look on with eager eyes at its drivers that are waiting in the wings in a season which could show a straight shootout between the Briton and the Dutchman.
