Event security to be discussed at next WMSC meeting after Brazil incidents

Event security at Formula 1 Grands Prix will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council next month, after a spate of incidents at Interlagos last weekend.

Several robberies, and attempted robberies, took place on Formula 1 personnel travelling from the circuit to their hotels at the end of each day, with various parties affected.

A group of armed robbers attacked a Mercedes team minibus, with one member of the team having a gun pointed to his head, as items – including passports – were stolen.

In reaction to the spate of incidents, the FIA – Formula 1’s governing body – has announced that the matter will be examined when it meets in December.

“The FIA has requested that reports be collated by the Commercial Rights Holder (Formula 1) concerning the incidents and presented to the members of the World Motor Sport Council at its next meeting on 6 December,” read a statement.

“In the continued spirit of positive collaboration with Formula 1, the Council will then discuss the ways in which a more consistent and effective security procedure can be applied at all events of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

“The findings will also be shared with other FIA championship organisers to maximise the positive impact this can have across all motor sport.

“Security is a cooperative effort, and the FIA will seek to work closely with Formula 1 and all its stakeholders to maintain a safe environment for everyone working at or visiting Formula 1 events.”
