Daniil Kvyat's Formula 1 career looks to be over after Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost confirmed the Russian has been dropped from the Red Bull driver programme with immediate effect.
Although Kvyat made a return in Austin for the United States Grand Prix at the weekend, having previously been dumped for Malaysia and Japan, it was purely a one-off to fill in for the absent Pierre Gasly, who had other commitments in Japan.
The former Red Bull driver, who was demoted to Toro Rosso at the Spanish GP last year in favour of Max Verstappen, won't be returning to F1 with either team in the future according to Tost.
"He is not anymore with Red Bull and therefore he is free to decide whatever he wants to do," said Tost.
When asked if that was with immediate effect or at the end of the season, he replied: "No, he’s not anymore with Red Bull and Toro Rosso."
Toro Rosso will see out the season with Gasly and Brendon Hartley and Tost says it's likely the pair will drive for the team in 2018.
"Because both are Red Bull drivers, both are high-skilled drivers, fast driver and we want to test them for the rest of the season, because there is a high possibility that this will be the driver line-up for 2018."
