IndyCar has released its 2018 schedule which features 17 races and a return to the Portland International Raceway, which has been absent for ten years.
The Portland event replaces Watkins Glen, which was added into the 2017 season as a last-minute replacement for the failed Boston race.
Other changes include Phoenix moving from its late April date to the first weekend of April, meaning the calendar features two occurences of three consecutive race weekends with Phoenix, Long Beach and Barber happening in the space of three weekends, and Pocono, Gateway and Portland.
Slotting in-between those two is a five consecutive event weekend, with the GP Indianapolis, Indy 500 qualifying, Indy 500, Detroit double-header and Texas Motor Speedway all happening across back-to-back weekends.
It's also believed an 18th race could be added, with speculation Mexico City is being lined up for a race, but this hasn't been confirmed.
"The strength and consistency of the Verizon IndyCar Series’ 2018 schedule is something all of us should be proud of,” said Mark Miles, CEO of IndyCar's parent company.
"We’re also looking forward to continuing the upward trend of the series through the introduction of the universal aero kits, which testing has shown to be an exciting product."
