A second chicane has been added to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, Spain, for the second day of Formula E pre-season testing.
On the first day of testing which was topped by Oliver Turvey, the track had one makeshift chicane on the start/finish straight which was installed to aid battery regeneration and emulate some of the characteristics of a street circuit layout.
The addition of a second left-right chicane on the start/finish straight will not only increase regeneration through an additional braking point but will also reduce the speed of cars when heading towards the original chicane.
Due to lower speeds, this will also reduce the likelihood of an accident in the chicane section of the circuit, with DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird bringing out a red flag in the morning session of the first day of testing after crashing into the makeshift chicane which was made out of two concrete blocks and supported with a tyre wall.
This resulted in safety concerns, with season two champion Sebastien Buemi being particularly vocal: "It's dangerous. We go to FE tracks that are safer than this," he told Motorsport.com
"They could have agreed with the circuit to give us proper kerbs, I would have preferred to see this. I just want something safe. I'm not very impressed."
