Honda rider Marc Marquez secured his fourth victory of the 2017 MotoGP season at Misano, to draw level with Andrea Dovizioso in the championship.
Rain throughout the day meant conditions were wet and tricky for the San Marino Grand Prix, with Ducati’s Jorge Lorenzo storming away at the start, going from fifth to first.
Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci took over the lead after Lorenzo crashed out on lap seven, having gradually picked his way up from eighth on the grid in the challenging early laps.
Marquez shadowed him for most of the race and Petrucci was unable to escape. On the final lap, Marquez made a move into the first corner to snatch the lead away from Petrucci.
He went on to win the race, moving him level on points with Dovizioso in the standings, with Petrucci picking up his third podium of the 2017 season.
Dovizioso claimed a slightly distant P3, struggling for pace in the closing laps. Polesitter Maverick Vinales faded to fourth, never having the speed to challenge in the wet conditions.
Ducati wildcard Michele Pirro was fifth, ahead of Marc VDS' Jack Miller and Pramac’s Scott Redding. Suzuki’s Alex Rins, Tech3’s Jonas Folger and KTM’s Bradley Smith completed the top 10.
Those three benefitted from late drama for Johann Zarco, who was running seventh until the final lap, when he ran out of fuel, which forced him to push his bike across the line to claim the final point with P15.
Several other riders hit problems, with Cal Crutchlow finishing a lowly 13th after running as high as fifth early on, before crashing.
Loris Baz also spent some time in the top 10 before hitting the tarmac, finishing a lapped 16th.
