Lewis Hamilton seized the championship advantage on Sunday in Monza as he claimed a lights to flag victory in the Italian Grand Prix to take a three-point lead over Sebastian Vettel.

The Briton was untouchable as he got a great start before driving off into the distance, with victory such a certainty that Mercedes chose to turn his engine down in the final third of the race.

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas made it a Mercedes 1-2 as he sliced through from fourth on the grid, putting himself between the two title protagonists as Vettel came home third at Ferrari's home race, more than half a minute down on the lead.

The German never had the pace to challenge Mercedes, but was quick enough to jump both Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll as well as his team-mate Kimi Räikkönen, fifth.

Daniel Ricciardo split the Ferraris after an impressive and mighty drive from 16th on the grid, finishing just four seconds adrift of Vettel.

Ocon went on to finish sixth ahead of Stroll, followed by the second Williams of Felipe Massa and the second Force India of Sergio Perez.

Max Verstappen completed the top ten to take the final point, but it was another race of 'what could have been' for the Dutchman as he rose to eighth on the opening lap before making contact with Massa, which gave him a front-right puncture and a broken front-wing, dropping him to last where he had to mount another fight back.

Kevin Magnussen was 11th for Haas ahead of Daniil Kvyat and Nico Hülkenberg.

The race saw four retirements with both McLarens failing to see the chequered flag, with Stoffel Vandoorne P11 when he retired with an engine issue.

Marcus Ericsson and Jolyon Palmer were the only other retirements.
