Italian GP starting grid: Penalties shake-up the order

The grid for the Italian Grand Prix looks rather different to the qualifying result after numerous penalties have been applied, with just four drivers remaining in their original places.

Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton remains on pole, whilst Carlos Sainz, Jolyon Palmer and Romain Grosjean, who crashed out of qualifying without setting a time, are the only other drivers to start in their actual qualifying position.

Penalties have been applied to Max Verstappen, who qualified an impressive second, but drops down the order thanks to a 20-place grid penalty, although the Dutchman only drops 11 places in total.

Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo qualified third, but will start down in 1t6h, a drop of just 13 places compared to an actual penalty of 25 places.

That hands the front-row slot alongside Hamilton to Lance Stroll, making the 18-year-old the youngest front-row starter in F1 history.

Other drivers to be hit with penalties are Nico Hulkenberg (10), Jolyon Palmer (15), Carlos Sainz (10), Fernando Alonso (35), Stoffel Vandoorne (25), Romain Grosjean (5) and Sergio Perez (5).

However despite Perez, Sainz and Palmer being hit with those penalties, they don't actually lose any places on the grid due to the way it is formed when penalties are applied.

The big winners are the Sauber drivers with Marcus Ericsson moving up eight places and Pascal Wehrlein seven. Whilst Kevin Magnussen, who failed to escape Q1, starts inside the top ten.
