Haas driver Kevin Magnussen says he is confused by the sanction he received for an incident with Nico Hülkenberg during the Hungarian Grand Prix, which led to a post-race confrontation.
Magnussen defended against Hülkenberg as the Renault driver attempted to make a move around the outside of Turn 2, having dropped back through the field after a pit stop problem.
Hülkenberg ended up on the grass and stewards deemed that Magnussen had forced his rival wide, issuing him with a five-second time penalty.
The additional time demoted Magnussen from 11th to 13th place, and the pair were involved in a feisty post-race scene, when Hülkenberg approached the Dane in the press pen.
Hülkenberg told Magnussen he was “the most unsporting driver,” leading the Haas driver to quickly hit back with “suck my balls honey.”
Hülkenberg went on to label Magnussen’s driving as like an “asshole” and “nasty,” while Magnussen later explained his point of view.
“I don’t really understand the penalty,” commented Magnussen.
“He didn’t get anything for what happened at Turn 1 when he smashed into the side of Romain [Grosjean], which finished his race effectively.
“I didn’t even touch him. He could have chosen to back out, as I had the corner. I was on the inside and we were side-by-side. If anything, I was a little bit in front.
“I just chose my line. It’s not like I moved off the racing line. We braked late, so it’s natural you go wide and push on the entry. He put himself in danger on the outside.”
