Sebastien Buemi's title challenge has been dealt a major blow after he was disqualified from Saturday's Montreal race result, losing his fourth place finish and his 12 points.
Buemi recovered from the back of the grid following contact during Lap 1 to finish fourth, whilst title rival Lucas di Grassi won the event to take a six-point lead in the standings. However it was found that Buemi's car was underweight and he has therefore been disqualified, losing his points and dropping to an 18-point deficit with one race remaining.
Article 5.1 of the Formula E technical regulations states that "the total weight of the complete car including the driver must not be less than 880kg at all times during the event."
According to a post-race weigh-in, Buemi's car fell short of that minimum, and the issue was only spotted after the race as there wasn't time to weigh it prior to the event as the Renault e.dams team were busy rebuilding it after a heavy practice shunt.
"There was insufficient time to weigh the car after the rebuild and before the race, even though the weighing platform schedule had been increased by 30 minutes by the Technical Delegate. The team reportedly added 4kg additional ballast to compensate for any weight variation in the rebuilt car."
At the time of writing, the team haven't appealed the decision.
