Sebastian Vettel praised Ferrari’s performance after he claimed pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Kimi Räikkönen completing a front-row lock-out.
Vettel and Ferrari outlined their potential by setting blistering pace during Saturday morning’s final practice session, and built on it in qualifying, recording the quickest ever laps at the Hungaroring.
Vettel revelled in his second pole position of the season, having also led qualifying in Russia, and inferred that it was the ideal response to those who had criticised Ferrari’s recent form.
“It was seamless in terms of we didn’t have any problems, I felt quite good in the car from Q1 onwards, we did the laps we had to do,” explained Vettel.
“In Q3 I was fairly confident, very happy with the first run, I knew there was still a little bit [of time] so I went flat out in the second run.
“I was a little bit faster, then I arrived in last sector and asked too much of tyres beforehand and lost it in three corners.
“I looked up [at the screen] and didn’t know who was behind me, when I saw it was two reds in the first two positions at the same time the radio opened and there was a big scream.
“It was really nice, it’s only Saturday and nothing to get today other than the best position but we did that, it’s great and especially after… there was a lot of talk after the last race, it was a bit much.
“So it’s good to give the answer on the track, I’m just happy, I really like the track, the car was fantastic today, it was really a pleasure to just go around.”
Vettel also reiterated the progress Ferrari had made year-on-year.
“Obviously the last race wasn’t great for us but it doesn’t matter now,” he said.
“We’re here and we try and do the best step-by-step, very happy with where we are as a team, we need to remember where we were 12 months ago and where we are now.”
