Daniel Ricciardo stays quickest in disrupted FP2

Daniel Ricciardo kept Red Bull on top as he clocked the quickest time during the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, which was disrupted by two red flags.

Ricciardo, having set the pace during Friday morning’s opening session, recorded a lap of 1:18.455 on the Supersoft tyres to finish 0.183s clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

Valtteri Bottas ensured that three different teams occupied the leading trio of positions once more, just 0.018s down on Vettel, with Kimi Räikkönen in fourth.

Lewis Hamilton comfortably set the pace on Soft tyres though did not record a representative time on Supersofts, meaning he classified in fifth position.

Max Verstappen rounded out the leading sextuplet of drivers, covered by less than half a second.

The 90-minute session, which took place in warm and sunny conditions, was interrupted by two stoppages, following separate incidents for Pascal Wehrlein and Jolyon Palmer.

Wehrlein lost control of his Sauber C36-Ferrari through Turn 11 and hit the barriers with the right-hand-side of his car, before rebounding into the secondary set of barriers with the left-hand-side.

Wehrlein was uninjured in the incident though was taken to the medical centre for a precautionary check-up.

The session was halted for over 10 minutes, and when it resumed the red flags came out again when Palmer went off at the final corner.

Palmer only joined the action 30 minutes into the session, having destroyed his front wing during a wayward moment in FP1, and his Renault R.S.17 snapped sideways as he turned into the right-hander.

Palmer consequently spun into the barriers, causing damage to the left-rear of his car, and he dejectedly walked away from the scene of the accident.

Palmer’s Renault team-mate, Nico Hülkenberg, led the midfield charge, over seven-tenths behind nearest opponent Verstappen, with Fernando Alonso eighth.

Carlos Sainz Jr. and Stoffel Vandoorne rounded out the top 10, though McLaren-Honda’s encouraging pace was blunted by the Belgian suffering a suspected power problem.

Vandoorne reported a “very strange noise” and crept back to the pit lane, sitting out the final part of proceedings.

Esteban Ocon edged Force India team-mate Sergio Pérez for 11th, setting a quicker pace despite skipping FP1 while Alfonso Celis Jr. ran, while Daniil Kvyat spun at Turn 1 en route to 13th spot.

Lance Stroll eclipsed Felipe Massa for 14th position, albeit with the Brazilian, who spun twice and went off-road once more, clocking his best time on Softs.

Palmer was 16th after his crash, while Kevin Magnussen joined the action for only the final chunk of running, as Haas repaired his VF-17 following Antonio Giovinazzi’s shunt in the morning.

Romain Grosjean was a lowly 18th, having complained about the feel of his car on multiple occasions, while Marcus Ericsson took 19th, in front of the stricken Wehrlein.
