Dane Cameron and Eric Curran claim surprising victory in CTMP thriller

Dane Cameron and Eric Curran surged through from the mid-pack to claim a surprise victory at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

The pair's #31 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R only came into contention during the final half-hour of the 160-minute contest in Canada, which was affected by three caution periods and a spell of rain.

Having started eighth, Curran kept on the lead lap but never mounted a challenge on the sharp end of the prototype pack.

However, incidents and strategy malfunctions for the front-runners enabled Cameron, who took over driving duties at the second round of stops, to come through and win by 8.295 seconds from the JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA-07 Gibson of Stephen Simpson.

The JDC car led the race outright heading into the driver changes after Misha Goikhberg overtook pole-sitter Ricky Taylor, but Simpson lost time during a superficial rain shower when he opted to change to wet tyres.

The rain shower occurred moments after Pipo Derani had caused the first caution period of the race when his Nissan-Onroak DPi stopped on-track with an engine blowout.

All three Cadillac runners, including the #31 Action Express, stayed out on slicks to build an advantage, although the leading Taylor car (driven at the end by Jordan Taylor) dropped off the lead lap with 20 minutes remaining when it tangled with the GTLM Corvette of Tommy Milner.

Milner's heavy contact with the tyre barriers resulted in the day's second caution period, and allowed Cameron to pass Taylor's limping car at the restart.

Problems for other cars, including isolated spins for the sole remaining ESM Nissan-Onroak and the other Action Express Cadillac of Joao Barbosa, helped seat Cameron in a winning position.

A final caution period confirmed the result when David Ostella rolled his PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Ligier.

Slotting behind Simpson to complete the podium was Ryan Dalziel in his recovering Nissan-Onroak, while the two Mazda DPis rounded out the top five.

In GT Le Mans, BMW took a one-two and its second consecutive victory following an late engine failure for the #911 Porsche.

Dirk Werner and Patrick Pilet had led virtually the entire race in their 911 RSR, but Pilet was instructed to bring the car into the pits following the second caution period, allowing the BMWs through.

Alexander Sims, who shared with Bill Auberlen, crossed the line ahead of John Edwards in the M6 started by Martin Tomczyk.

Completing the podium was the Ford GT driven by Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe, with the surviving Corvette C7.R in fourth.

Porsche's other 911 hope ended up sixth behind the sister Ford after losing time through an early puncture.

Honours in the GT Daytona category went the way of Lawson Aschenbach and Andrew Davis in their Stevenson Motorsports-entered Audi R8.

A pit violation-related drive-through penalty for the pole-sitting Lexus promoted the Audi pair to the front, and despite a strong challenge from the Jeff Segal/Oswaldo Negri Jr Acura, managed to hold on to the finish.

Rounding out the podium – and extending its streak of top-three finishes to six races – was the championship leading Ferrari of Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan.

Prototype Challenge was won by the Performance Tech Motorsports ORECA pairing of Patricio O'Ward and James French, as the team maintained its 100% win record in 2017 despite needing to make an extra stop to repair the front-end following contact with on-track debris.

Round eight of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship (for the GT classes only) takes place at Lime Rock Park in two weeks' time.
