The FIA has revealed the first picture of the ‘shield’ Formula 1 cockpit protection device, and plans for it to be tested at the British Grand Prix next weekend.
It has been working for several months on an alternative to the earlier ‘halo’ device, which was tried out in several free practice sessions, and Red Bull’s ‘aeroscreen’.
Cockpit protection was set to arrive in 2017 before this was pushed back, in order for more analysis and development to take place.
It was then revealed that the FIA was backing a new idea called ‘the shield’ and the device has now been unveiled for the first time.
The wrap-around screen extends further down the nose and has been displayed on a Williams FW40; several designs are being considered.
Plans are for it to complete a full test at Monza in September, but the FIA is keen to gain feedback at an earlier stage of development.
As a result, Ferrari will try out the shield – giving the device its public debut – during Friday practice at Silverstone.
