Audi’s René Rast converted pole position into his maiden DTM victory at the Hungaroring, overhauling early-stopping stablemate Mattias Ekström during the closing stages.
Rast cruised clear at the start while fourth-placed Ekström elected to make his mandatory stop after a handful of laps, with Rast extending his first stint, before he too dived into the pits.
Ekström emerged with the lead of the race, but was closely followed by Rast, who made his move along the pits straight with five minutes remaining.
Rast held the inside line to move ahead, with Ekström slotting into second place, as Audi took its third victory of the campaign.
The win propelled Rast into the lead of the standings, one point clear of Lucas Auer, who retired from the back of the pack, having plummeted down the order following a slow pit stop.
Maxime Martin made his compulsory pit stop from 14th place at the end of the opening lap and used free air to good effect, surging through the order when his rivals stopped.
Martin emerged in third as the strategies played out, in front of Audi’s Nico Muller, with the leading quartet crossing the line as a group.
Jamie Green was fifth, with Race 1 winner Paul di Resta moving forwards to take sixth, in front of Timo Glock and Robert Wickens.
Gary Paffett and Mike Rockenfeller rubbed panels during the closing stages as the Mercedes driver beat his Audi rival to ninth spot, the pair profiting when reigning champion Marco Wittmann retired late on.
