DTM championship leader and Mercedes driver Lucas Auer put in a controlled drive in the first Lausitzring race to extend his advantage.

Auer started from pole and quickly opened up a lead over the field, only losing first place during the pitstop phase. He emerged from his stop seven seconds clear of Robert Wickens.

It was a straight-forward race win for Auer, although fellow Mercedes driver Wickens closed the gap to him in the closing stages.

Nevertheless, Auer still crossed the line 3.613s clear to score his second victory from the first three races of the 2017 season.

The Austrian was joined on the podium by Wickens, who lined up on the front row but lost out to BMW’s Maxime Martin and jumped back ahead in the pitstops.

René Rast was the leading Audi driver in third place, having passed Martin with seven laps remaining.

Martin had to settle for fourth, ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, who finished just two tenths behind and made up ground with an early stop.

Gary Paffett pulled off a similar strategy and was sixth, with Auer’s team-mate Edoardo Mortara the last to stop and coming home seventh after an aggressive final stint.

Mattias Ekström was eighth, ahead of Maro Engel and Jamie Green, who started from the back of the grid for using the wrong tyres.
