Ed Carpenter has ended a wind-affected third practice session fastest at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, after a day with limited running due to the unfavourable weather conditions.

A wind advisory had been issued for the circuit throughout the day, with some gusts as high as 35mph and greatly hindering the teams and drivers as preparations continued around the 2.5-mile oval.

Scott Dixon was P2 for Chip Ganassi Racing, after trading the top spot throughout the day with Carpenter.

The four-time champion sat atop the classification for the majority of the day, before Carpenter lowered the benchmark during the final hour of track action.

J.R. Hildebrand was third fastest for Ed Carpenter Racing, completing the most mileage during the day along with team-mate and team owner Carpenter.

Hildebrand was the first driver to complete a lap when the session initially got underway, producing the initial benchmark along with James Hinchcliffe and Mikhail Aleshin.

Double Formula 1 racer Fernando Alonso impressed many during the final hour in particular, as the McLaren-Honda-Andretti racer opted to return to the track despite the blustery conditions.

During the final hour Alonso improved massively, handling the windy conditions admirably to end the day fourth fastest overall with 39 laps completed.

Conor Daly was P5 for A.J. Foyt Racing, improving to the sharp end of the order during the latter stages of the day.

Former F1 racer Max Chilton managed to end proceedings sixth for Chip Ganassi Racing, running as high as P2 at one stage before gradually falling down the order.

Carlos Munoz was seventh ahead of rookie Zach Veach, the latter completing 46 laps overall and ending the day as the last driver out on the race track.

Meanwhile Charlie Kimball and Jay Howard rounded out the top ten, with Howard in particular producing the fastest lap during the early stages of the day before Dixon and Carpenter took to the circuit.

With the wind causing headaches up and down the paddock, many teams elected to focus their attention on pit-stop practice.

Some drivers failed to even complete a lap throughout the whole day, including reigning champion Simon Pagenaud and Penske team-mates Helio Castroneves and Will Power.

As ever there were a handful of caution periods due to debris, with no incidents during the entirety of the practice session.
