Renault e.dams driver Sébastien Buemi backed up his strong practice pace by taking pole position for the Monaco ePrix.
It was his first pole of the 2016/2017 season and in setting the quickest lap time he became the fifth different pole sitter from the opening quintet of events.
Buemi made it through to Super Pole despite running in the opening qualifying group, where the conditions were trickier amid a relative lack of grip.
He put in a 53.313 second time in Super Pole to snatch first place on the grid, two tenths clear of his championship rival Lucas di Grassi – despite the Brazilian clipping the wall exiting Antony Nogues.
NextEV NIO’s Nelson Piquet Jr was third fastest in qualifying, even though he clouted the barrier at Piscine, while Jean-Eric Vergne was fourth for Techeetah after a mistake on his 200kW final lap.
Venturi’s Maro Engel bounced back from two difficult practice sessions to make it through to Super Pole but contact with the Piscine exit wall meant he had to settle for fifth.
Felix Rosenqvist recovered from his practice one crash and was sixth, just missing out on a spot in the pole position shootout.
José María López was seventh, keeping up his encouraging pace from the earlier sessions, with Nick Heidfeld eighth in the second Mahindra after a late lap in his qualifying group.
Daniel Abt and DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird completed the top 10, ahead of Stephane Sarrazin, Loïc Duval and Robin Frijns.
Techeetah's Esteban Gutierrez, who made his Formula E debut in Monaco, will start from 14th, with Jaguar driver Mitch Evans for company.
Oliver Turvey tagged the barrier at exiting Sainte Devote and could only manage 16th, with António Félix da Costa, Nicolas Prost and Jérôme d'Ambrosio – who didn’t get a 200kW lap in due to a problem – rounding out the field.
