Rookie Ed Jones believes the INDYCAR Grand Prix around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course could be his best chance to get a good result this year, due largely to the infield circuit’s European-style.
The reigning IndyLights champion has enjoyed a competitive start to his IndyCar career with Dale Coyne Racing, finishing in the top ten during the first two races of the season at St. Petersburg and Long Beach.
Despite dropping out of the top ten in the last two races at Barber and Phoenix, and also being slightly overshadowed by team-mate Sebastien Bourdais’s superb start to the season, Jones is remaining confident of further success during the month of May.
"It's been a good track for me in the past,” explained Jones about the infield road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“It’s quite a European-style circuit so I think that's one of the reasons why I feel so comfortable there.
“I'm looking forward to getting out there in an Indy car.
“I think it's probably one of our best chances to get a good result so far this year.
“Hopefully we can make some more progress.”
The infield road course originally hosted Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix between 2000 and 2007, but has since held MotoGP races and most recently an IndyCar event since 2014 which has become incorporated in the month of May leading up to the coveted Indianapolis 500.
Mikhail Aleshin also believes the infield road course has a distinct European-style to it, as the Russian racer gears up for his third month of May as an IndyCar driver.
"I think it's great that we're coming back to the Indy GP track,” enthused Aleshin.
“I really enjoy every time I get to be in a race car on the IMS road course.
“The track is very smooth. It has a very European style and it has a lot of great corners.
“I'm really looking forward to getting the month of May started.”
