Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne has thanked the fans for standing by Ferrari during the team's lengthy win drought and says it's "about time" they won, following Sebastian Vettel's victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Ferrari's form impressed onlookers during pre-season testing and Vettel delivered on the promise at Albert Park, leaping ahead of pole man Lewis Hamilton through the pit stop phase to inherit a lead which he would not relinquish.

It was Ferrari's first triumph since Singapore 2015, and after the victory, Marchionne issued a statement congratulating the team, but warned it was just one victory from 20 races.

"It was about time," he said. "I am delighted for the team and for our tifosi who stood by us throughout this whole period.

"We've been waiting for this victory for almost a year and a half. Hearing the Italian national anthem again was very moving.

"Sebastian delivered a great race and I am sure Kimi will be soon up there battling alongside his team-mate," he continued.

"Of course, this victory is something to share with the entire team, both at the circuit and back in Maranello, because teamwork is the only way to achieve major goals.

"Congratulations to Antonio [Giovinazzi] for his debut in Formula 1," Marchionne added in reference to the Ferrari reserve driver making his debut with Sauber, placing 12th.

"Now, however, it is absolutely essential to remember that this is not the destination but the first step on a long road that must see us all focused on improving each and every day."
