Honda ‘spending what it takes’ to be competitive – Zak Brown

McLaren boss Zak Brown insists Honda are doing everything they can to be competitive as quickly as they can this season following a difficult pre-season which saw their power unit experience multiple problems, severely limiting McLaren's running.

The Woking team managed just 11 continuous laps during testing and spent many hours each day consigned to their garage as Honda were forced to change their power unit eight times across the eight days.

Brown insists both sides are committed to making the project work despite McLaren's approach to rival Mercedes about a potential switch.

"Our communications are with Honda and we're trying to figure out with Honda what's the best long-term strategy but also we need some short-term results," Brown told RACER. "So I'm going to keep our solutions that we're working on with Honda to ourselves."

Brown says speed is of the essence as McLaren's other partners won't put up with poor performances forever.

"We need to fix our situation quickly, so we're looking at all the different ways to do that," he added.

"We have other partners who are expecting results, so we need to take care of our Honda partnership but we also need to take care of our Chandons, NTTs, Johnnie Walkers and SAPs of the world. They want some results.

"We've got a long history with Honda, they're spending what it takes, they're committed, so they're the right partner. We've just got a technical glitch that we need to work through very, very quickly."

There is speculation McLaren could switch to Mercedes power at the third race of the season in Bahrain, whilst Honda works on a total redesign of its power unit for the 2018 season, which would deliver the short term results McLaren need, whilst remaining loyal to its Honda partnership.
