GP2 driver Nicholas Latifi says he is hoping to increase his involvement with the Renault Formula 1 team in 2017.

He joined Renault as a test driver in March, juggling F1 duties alongside his first full-time season in GP2 with DAMS.

The Canadian completed running in private tests at Silverstone and Valencia with Renault’s 2012 car, the E20.

However, the plan of taking part in a first practice session during the 2016 F1 season failed to materialise.

Latifi is looking to expand his involvement with the Renault F1 team next year.

“I have been involved with the team at a number of F1 race weekends and experiencing the races from behind the scenes, working and being part of it, makes me want it even more,” he explained.

“It confirms my F1 goal; it's what I want to do and that's what I'm working towards. I really enjoyed those experiences and hopefully next year I'll be able to go to more races and keep learning.”

He finished 16th in GP2 this year, with one podium finish. Reflecting on his 2016, he said: “The best way I can sum it up is as a big, big learning year.

“Going into it, the plan was that it was always going to be about learning and development. But that didn't mean I approached it with anything less than full commitment.

“I definitely got a clear understanding of how difficult the championship can be for a rookie. Even the smallest details make a huge difference in GP2.”
