Lewis Hamilton will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from pole position after he pipped team-mate and championship rival Nico Rosberg by just 0.102s, with the pair the only drivers to dip into the 1m10's.

Hamilton's result is a new record for Mercedes, which has claimed the most pole positions in a single season at 19 – with only Red Bull having beaten them this season in Monaco.

Kimi Raikkonen will start third as he outqualified both Red Bull's Max Verstappen and team-mate Sebastian Vettel in fourth and fifth respectively.

The Finn was more than six-tenths adrift however, as Mercedes retained their dominant Saturday form.

The second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo was sixth, whilst Haas' Romain Grosjean surprised to finish seventh ahead of the two Force Indias and the McLaren of Fernando Alonso.

The session was a dry one, despite the threat of rain which never materialised, with little drama in any of the three segments.

Williams disappointed to finish just P11 and P13 with Esteben Gutierrez splitting Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

Jenson Button could only manage 17th, ten places lower than team-mate Alonso.
