One of the world's largest oil companies is set to return to Formula 1 as a sponsor and supplier to the McLaren F1 team according to respected journalist Joe Saward.

BP, which was last seen in F1 back in 1994, is set to replace McLaren's current fuel and lubricant supplier ExxonMobil as of the 2017 season.

BP will become McLaren's official fuel supplier according to the report, whilst its lubricant brand Castrol could also be visible on the cars driven by Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne.

The London-based company is looking to rebuild its brand which was damaged by the Deepwater Horizion disaster in 2010, which saw millions of barrels of oil leak into the Gulf of Mexico, costing the company billions in compensation.

It's also reported that America's ExxonMobil, via its Mobil 1 brand, will switch to Red Bull, replacing Total, a French oil company which also supplies and sponsors the Renault team.
