Daniel Ricciardo claimed his first victory of the 2016 season for Red Bull in Malaysia, as what looked like a comfortable victory for Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton came crashing down when his engine gave up just 17 laps from the end of the race.
The Briton led from the start and looked in control of the grand prix before flames shot out from the rear of his W09, to which Hamilton exclaimed "No, no, no" in disbelief.
The reliability troubles handed the lead to Ricciardo who fought against Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen in the closing laps, with the pair split by just 2.4 seconds come the checkered flag to claim a 1-2 for the Milton Keynes team.
Meanwhile Nico Rosberg claimed the final podium spot to extend his championship lead, despite finding himself down in P17 at the start of the race after he and Sebastian Vettel made contact at Turn 1.
The collision ended Vettel's race with front-suspension damage, but Rosberg escaped damage and mounted a fight back through the field which included a risky move on the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen for fourth, with whom he made contact and was hit with a ten second penalty by the stewards. That didn't effect the outcome however as Raikkonen finished fourth, 13 seconds down on the German.
Valtteri Bottas was fifth ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez and McLaren's Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard started last but made up a handful of places on the opening lap as he avoided the first corner carnage. Team-mate Jenson Button, in his 300th race, finished ninth behind Nico Hulkenberg.
Renault's Jolyon Palmer completed the top ten to score his first ever championship point in Formula 1.
Amongst the six retirements were both Haas drivers. Romain Grosjean suffered a brake issue during the opening laps and span off into the gravel at the final corner, whilst Esteban Gutierrez lost a front wheel, both incidents bringing out a virtual safety car.
