Lewis Hamilton dominated qualifying for the 2016 Italian Grand Prix to take his seventh pole position of the season – the 56th of his career – with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg a distant second to give Mercedes a front-row lock-out.

Hamilton's 1m21.135s time was just a tenth shy of Rubens Barrichello's 2004 lap record and almost half a second quicker than Rosberg could manage.

Local favourites Ferrari overhauled nearest rival Red Bull to lock-out the second row with Sebastian Vettel leading Kimi Raikkonen by a tenth, although the pair were some way off Hamilton's time.

Valtteri Bottas performed for Williams, placing fifth ahead of the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

Force India will be disappointed to fall behind Williams with Sergio Perez leading Nico Hulkenberg in eighth and ninth respectively, whilst the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez completed the top ten – their first Q3 appearance.

The second Williams of Felipe Massa was the fastest loser in Q2, failing to make the cut to finish ahead of Romain Grosjean – yet to serve a five-place grid penalty – with Pascal Wehrlein splitting the McLarens in P13, P14 and P15.

Wehrlein's team-mate, Esteban Ocon, failed to set a timed lap as he pulled off the circuit with a problem during the opening minutes of Q1. He starts last behind the Toro Rosso, Sauber and Renault drivers.
