Andrea Iannone scored his maiden MotoGP victory on Sunday at the Austrian Grand Prix as he battled against Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, to give the team their first win since 2010 and their first 1-2 since 2007.

The pole sitter fought hard against his team-mate in the opening laps as Dovizioso taking second from Valentino Rossi at the start, before later taking the lead of the race.

Rossi meanwhile dropped back to fourth as Jorge Lorenzo claimed third, though they remained in touch of the leaders.

That was until Dovizioso and Iannone pulled a gap in first and second before the latter managed to retake the lead with just eight laps of the race remaining. The pair would finish less than a second adrift of one another as the fight went down to the final lap.

Lorenzo managed to hold off Rossi for third and fourth respectively whilst Marc Marquez completed the top five ahead of Maverick Vinales.

Avintia’s Hector Barbera finished seventh but was later disqualified for failing to serve a drive-through penalty for jumping the start.

A number of riders were caught out for false starts, including Cal Crutchlow, Yonny Hernandez, Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl.

Barbera's DSQ promoted Honda's Dani Pedrosa with Eugene Laverty (Aspar Ducati), Scott Redding (Pramac Ducati) and Pol Espargaro (Yamaha Tech 3) completing the top ten.

Aleix Espargaro was the only retirement.
