Nico Rosberg ended up quickest on Friday as he topped practice two for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the only driver to get below the 1:21 mark. Meanwhile Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton crashed out.

Rosberg's 1:20.435 was more than 1.5 seconds quicker than last year's pole time and more than half a second quicker than Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo could manage in second.

Sebastian Vettel was third quickest for Ferrari, splitting the Red Bulls with Max Verstappen fourth. The top four all setting their best lap on the supersoft compound – the softest available this weekend.

In fifth was Hamilton. The Briton had completed just one timed lap before he lost control at Turn 11, sliding sideways into the tyre wall. Although it caused little damage and Hamilton was able to get going again, the session was red flagged.

Hamilton had to sit out the remainder of the session as a mandatory visit to the medical centre beckoned following a 10 G-sensor activation.

Hamilton only used the soft tyre for his timed run and was 1.5 seconds off Rosberg's pace.

Kimi Raikkonen was sixth ahead of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. The McLaren pair impressing at a circuit that should suit their car.

Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez completed the top ten positions, both more than two seconds adrift of the leading pace.

There were plenty of incidents aside from Hamilton's barrier thump, with Rio Haryanto spinning his Manor at Turn whilst Sauber's Felipe Nasr's Sauber slowed without warning at Turn 2 and a approaching Carlos Sainz span just metres from him before retiring from the session a few laps later
