Honda's Marc Marquez will start the German round of the MotoGP championship from pole position after nearest championship rival Jorge Lorenzo crashed out twice, meaning the Yamaha rider starts just 11th.
Marquez secured a dominant pole by more than four-tenths to Avintia's Hector Barbera on Saturday around the Sachsenring, with the pair sharing the front-row with Yamaha's Valentino Rossi, third.
There have been no shortage of crashes this weekend so far, but with perfect conditions for qualifying, fewer crashes were expected. But Lorenzo suffered a nightmare session as he fell in Q1 at Turn 8, narrowly making the Q2 cut by just 0.050s.
The Spaniard would fall again though on his second run in Q2 at Turn 1, putting him 11th on the grid, just behind Dani Pedrosa.
Ducati’s Andrea Iannone also fell on his second lap, but managed to recover and finished up ninth behind Suzuki Ecstar's Aleix Espargaro, eighth and Andrea Dovizioso, seventh.
Britain's Cal Crutchlow came close to making the Q2 cut – and forcing Lorenzo out in the process – but blamed Stefan Bradl for getting in his way and costing him time, to finish P13 overall.
