Nico Rosberg demoted to third as stewards impose 10-second time penalty

Nico Rosberg has been demoted to third place after he was handed a 10-second time penalty following an investigation into illegal radio transmissions between him and his race engineer.

During the British Grand Prix, Rosberg encountered a gearbox issue which he claimed was a lap away from failing, had the team not intervened. In a radio call, his engineer told him to "chassis default 0-1" and to also "shift through" seventh gear.

The stewards deemed that the team gave instructions which breached Article 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations, which say that "a driver must drive the car alone and unaided".

They imposed a 10-second time penalty as punishment, which drops Rosberg from second to third, behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The result means Rosberg now has a one point lead over team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the championship standings.

Statement in full: "Radio transmissions aiding the driver – 10-second time penalty imposed after the race in accordance with Article 38.3 (10 seconds to elapsed race time).

"Having considered the matter extensively, the Stewards determined that the team gave some instructions to the driver that were specifically permitted under Technical Directive 014-16.

"However, the Stewards determined that the team then went further and gave instructions to the driver that were not permitted under the Technical Directive, and were in Breach of Article 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations, that a driver must drive the car alone and unaided."
