Jordan King reigns in Silverstone Sprint race with lights to flag victory

Jordan King reigned in the rain in Silverstone on Sunday, winning the GP2 Sprint race from lights to flag with Luca Ghiotto claiming his first GP2 podium behind.

The Briton had to hold on for dear life as heavy rain pelted the circuit with just a handful of laps remaining, tip-toing around on slicks.

After a great start, the Manor development driver had things his own way for the better part of 15 laps, until a late surge from Trident's Luca Ghiotto threatened to depose him.

The rain started to come down hard with just a few laps remaining, and Racing Engineering team mate Norman Nato soon overstepped the limit of adhesion, spinning off into the gravel at Brooklands.

Despite the late deluge, it was a well-behaved performance from most during the race, with Artem Marvelov and Sergey Sirotkin's minor collision – resulting in the latter's spin – the only contact of note.

Pierre Gasly had a woeful start from eighth on the grid and found himself well outside the points and frustrated behind Sergio Canamasas, but his patience paid off when he got past the Spaniard on Lap 6. He then set about demoting Nicolas Latifi and Marvin Kirchhoefer, before gaining another place thanks to Nato's pin, and stealing seventh from Mitch Evans as the rain fell.

Oliver Rowland also impressed, cutting through the pack form sixth to score another third place finish; his second of the weekend, and his third podium in a row.

Rowland's consistency means he now leads the standings from Raffaele Marciello by a single point, despite not having yet won a race.

King led home Ghiotto, Rowland, Antonio Giovinazzi, Nobuharu Matsushita, Marciello, Gasly, and Kirchhoefer completed the points, with Canamasas and Latifi rounding out the top ten.
