Nico Rosberg fastest as sudden downpour interrupts practice

Nico Rosberg was fastest again during second practice for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, posting a 1m07.967 to beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.019 seconds.

Rosberg posted his best time just before a sudden downpour hit the circuit, turning the surface into a river as the rain continued to fall for a good half hour.

The track did however dry quickly allowing for the action to continue following a 40-minute break.

It was soon dry enough for slicks and the times at the front began to tumble, allowing Hamilton to close up, whilst Force India's Nico Hulkenberg went third quickest, six tenths adrift.

Rosberg looked set to go even quicker before a spin from Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel – which saw him narrowly avoid a high-speed collision with the barriers – ended the session.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo completed the top five fastest drivers.

Vettel wasn't the only Ferrari to spin. Kimi Raikkonen also ended up in the gravel when he lost the rear at Turn 5, but was able to escape the trap under his own power to rejoin the action.

With Jolyon Palmer spinning in the wet conditions, the majority returned to the pits and simply waited for the conditions to improve, which they eventually did.
