Ed Carpenter Racing has announced that the injured Josef Newgarden will be replaced by J.R. Hildebrand until he recovers.
IndyCar has confirmed that Newgarden sustained a broken right clavicle and a small fracture to his right hand after a crash during last weekend’s Firestone 600, before it was postponed.
Conor Daly lost control of his car on lap 43 at the Texas Motor Speedway and collected Newgarden, who was attempting a move around the outside.
Hildebrand has competed in the Indianapolis 500 with Ed Carpenter Racing for the last three years, but has not raced full-time in the IndyCar series since 2012.
"He's fast, so you know Josef Newgarden will work on a speedy recovery," the team said in a post on social media.
"J. R Hildebrand will drive the No. 21 until Newgarden is ready."
Hildebrand will drive the car at Wednesday’s test at Road America.
