Ferrari can still win 2016 title insists team boss Maurizio Arrivabene

Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene believes the title is still possible for the Italian team, despite falling further behind Mercedes in Monaco, whilst Red Bull have closed the gap in the previous two races.

Ferrari are now 67 points adrift of the championship lead and following Max Verstappen's Spanish win, followed by Daniel Ricciardo's second place in Monaco, the buffer to Red Bull has closed to just nine points.

But Arrivabene insists the season is far from over for Ferrari, with mixed results – three different winners from the last three races – meaning no driver or team is running away with the championship at present.

"No way," he said, when asked if the title was a target too far now. "You saw Ricciardo here was quite good, and Hamilton is coming back.

"So what we have to do is to keep our concentration, to keep focus, concentrate and look forward. This championship is going to be quite interesting I think."

The Italian blamed Ferrari's qualifying performance in Spain and Monaco for their underwhelming results of late, which has seen the team score just 45 points, compared to Red Bull's 55 in the last couple of grands prix, despite looking the quicker team in the opening races of the season.

"If we had qualified better, the result would also had been better," added Arrivabene. "Our car had a very good race pace but that’s not enough, as we must make sure that we stay competitive for the whole weekend.

"We now look forward to the next race in Canada where we don’t want to be caught out, as we want to be up to our name. The season is still very long, and it’s not in the DNA of Ferrari to surrender."
