Max Verstappen became the youngest ever Formula 1 race winner as he secured a sensational victory on his Red Bull debut at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, capping off a fantastic week for the 18-year-old.

Verstappen brilliantly defended for the final 20 laps as he came under pressure from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in second, but the Dutch driver kept his cool and positioned his car in the perfect place each time to take the checkered flag ahead of the Finn.

Raikkonen finished just +0.616s down, whilst Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel was a further five seconds adrift as he battled the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo, fourth.

The lead of the race was initially handed to Ricciardo at the start when Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided, sending them both into the gravel trap at Turn 4 – a collision which has divided opinion on who was to blame.

That left Red Bull in the driving seat, but a split strategy cost Ricciardo a potential victory as he chose to three-stop over Verstappen's two – which proved to be the quicker option.

Raikkonen and Vettel were in the same boat, as they too split strategies, again, Raikkonen's two-stop proved quicker and he finished ahead of the German.

Ricciardo came close to salvaging third as he fought Vettel hard in the closing laps, before a puncture on the penultimate lap forced him to make a fourth unscheduled stop.

Williams' Valtteri Bottas was fifth ahead of the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz at his home race. Meanwhile Sergio Perez, Felipe Massa, Jenson Button and Daniil Kvyat completed the top ten.

Five drivers failed to finish. The two Mercedes colliding on the opening lap was the only real drama. Nico Hulkenberg stopped on track with flames shooting from the rear of his Force India, whilst Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean lost power.
