Team bosses set for urgent vote on return to ‘old’ qualifying format

Formula 1 team bosses will meet on Sunday ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix to discuss the sport's new qualifying format and whether it can be dropped ahead of the Bahrain GP in a fortnights time.

The new elimination format was rushed through just weeks ahead of the first race in an attempt to "mix things up" according to those who pushed for it, but following its first test on Saturday it failed to deliver on its promises, causing confusion and prompting drivers to stay in their garages.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff described it as "pretty rubbish", whilst Red Bull's Christian Horner apologised to fans for "getting it wrong". They were just two to condemn the new format with almost unanimous agreement up and down the grid.

An urgent meeting has been called and will take place on Sunday morning. It will involve a representative from all 11 teams as wel as the FIA and commercial rights holder, as changing the rules at such short notice requires unanimous support.

It's understood they will vote to return to the previous format which has been in use since 2006, rather than voting for any tweaks to the current format which Wolff said would require "careful thought" to avoid a repeat of the problems they experienced on Saturday.
