Former Formula 1 driver Vitaly Petrov has joined SMP Racing for the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship season in the LMP2 class.
Petrov last raced in F1 with Caterham four seasons ago following a two-year stint with Renault that saw him become the first Russian to finish on the podium in the world championship grand prix.
Petrov spent 2014 with Mercedes in the DTM, but failed to score any points before having a year out of racing.
The Russian will return to the track in 2016 with SMP Racing as part of its expanded LMP2 operation in the WEC, complementing its GTE Am car.
“Friends! I want to tell you the news – I will spend 2016 with SMP Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship!” Petrov wrote on Instagram.
“I want to personally thank Boris Romanovich Rothenberg for giving me the opportunity to fly the Russian flag in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race.”
Petrov has one previous appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans when he raced for Noel del Bello Racing in 2007.
